: Goslar (population 43,000) is a picturesque medieval town in Lower Saxony, 150 miles west of Berlin and at the foot of the Harz Mountains. After 37 years of sports exchanges between Goslar and Raanana (Hapoel Raanana), it was agreed to formalize the friendship between the two cities and, in July 2006, Deputy Mayor Dr. Tzippy Dolfin represented Mayor Hofree at the signing of the friendship agreement. Accompanied by city council member Vered Molcho and a delegation of youth counselors from Raanana (Madatzim), Dr. Dolfin noted at the signing ceremony that, as the child of Holocaust survivors, she felt particularly proud to "close the circle and contribute my small part to the shared future of the next generations. During these difficult times for Israel, it is heartwarming for me to accept the hand of friendship from Goslar, especially in the context of the long and sometimes difficult relationship between Israel and Germany."
The Mayor of Goslar, Dr. Otmar Hesse, also referred to the past, while recognizing that such friendships, especially between youth, holds hope for the future. "The memory of the past will always be a cornerstone of German-Israel relationships."
The two cities pledged to work together in the areas of culture, sport and welfare, with an emphasis on the youth, in an attempt to deepen mutual understanding based on shared history and a desire to prevent anti-Semitism and racism in the future.
