Spikes
The main purpose of laying down spikes is to make it uncomfortable for the pigeons to land in a certain place - therefore preventing their return to that place. The spikes are suitable for keeping pigeons away from gutters on roofs, roof ventilators, window boxes, fences, air-conditioners, tiled roofs, etc.
The various characteristics of the spikes are important:
A. Width – the width of the strip of spikes available today runs between 3 – 15 centimeters. The spike should be selected according to the width of the surface upon which the strip will be placed. This in order to prevent the possibility of leaving space for the pigeons to roost.
B. Height – The length of the pigeon's feet is about 4 cm. - so the spike must be higher than that (the recommended height is about 9cm. or higher).
C. Flexibility – Note that the more the spike is flexible and springy, the more the pigeon will feel discomfort when trying to land.
D. Durability of the material – here it is important to distinguish between the spikes and their base. The spikes are effective if they are made from flexible and non- rigid material (stainless or galvanized steel) and the base should be durable against the sun, rain, etc. – so it will last for a longer period of time (a base of polycarbonate or stainless steel is recommended). Installation of spikes should be done by silicone adhesion, so that the spikes can be removed if necessary.
Wire Netting.
The main purpose of installing wire netting (mesh) is to prevent the pigeon from entering various places. The wire netting is designed to keep the pigeons out of areas such as laundry porches, various niches in the building and the open space under the tiled roof, etc. The price of this wire netting per meter is much less expensive than the spikes option but it cannot solve the problem in all areas.
The type of netting is important:
A. Density – Netting with the proper density should be selected for maximum efficiency.
B. Durable material – It is very important to select a durable material (strength of wire), so that the solution will be as long lasting as possible.
C. Color – Important to the aesthetic appearance of the structure.
