500 children in the Raanana’s Beit Hatalmid after-school daycare programs are growing organic vegetable gardens, in cooperation with the Raanana Municipality Supplementary Education Division’s Field School, which operates a variety of classes on nature, animals and environmental protection.

The children are given detailed explanations on the different stages of cultivation and participate in the experience of planting various kinds of vegetables, such as lettuce, green onion, parsley, peppers, squash and radishes.  They tend to the vegetable gardens until the vegetables are fully grown; and later, they prepare soups and salads using their produce.  The activity gives the children a glimpse into the world of plants and raises their awareness as to healthy nutrition and environmental protection, and teaches values related to nature and the environment.
