: The city of Raanana continues with its efforts on behalf of environmental protection. In 2009, the rate of recycling of waste in Raanana was 39%. This is an increase of 17% in comparison to the rate collected in 2008.
IN 2009, Raanana recycled a total of 4,169 tons of home waste, of the total of 27,000 tons of waste in 2009 – this is a rate of 15%. Moreover, 8,718 tons of tree trimmings were recycled out of the 14,000 tons of tree trimmings collected - a rate of 63 percent.
Other recycling statistics: Plastic (bottles): 143 tons; Paper: 1,429 tons; Cardboard: 1,240.4 tons, Glass, Cans and Plastics: 698 tons; Metal (electronics, batteries): 1,886 tons and Other (clothing, plastic bags): 62 tons.
In total, the amount recycled in 2009 came to 18,345 tons, total of waste to be interred: 28,758 and total waste (interred, recycled and returned resources): 47,103 tons.
In contrast, the total waste recycled in 2008 came to 9,317.5 tons and a total of 32,561 tons of waste to be interred – a rate of 22.2 percent.
Raanana is the first city in Israel to recycle CDs and DVDs, expired medications (in cooperation with Superpharm) and plastic bags! On dozens of plastic bottle recycling bins, special containers for CD/DVDs have been attached.
There are neighborhood recycling centers disbursed citywide: 90 containers for plastic bottles, 50 for newspaper, 20 for cardboard and 40 for used batteries. There is also a container for the collection of electronic waste in the industrial zone.
Raanana is the first city in Israel to collect all types of paper and cardboard at all of its apartment buildings, in cooperation with Amnir Ltd. The municipality also collects paper from private homeowners in Raanana. The municipality also collects cardboard from shop-owners at different points along Ahuza Street.
Mayor Nahum Hofree: “We invest a great deal in order to instill intelligent and green behavior among our residents and we are proud of the increase in the recycling rates which indicate successful cooperation of the community and high awareness with regard to the intelligence use of waste to protect the environment.”
