Last Tuesday, all of Raanana’s Yachdav Elementary School students walked to school in the morning, as part of the “Walking to School Together” project, to show their solidarity with the Shalit Family’s trek to free Gilad.

The students wore yellow ribbons and carried signs that they prepared, which called for the release of the captive soldier.  Mayor Nahum Hofree, the school’s principals and teachers and many parents joined the walk, as well as City Council Members Sima Perry and Dan Baruch.

Throughout the year, the students have dealt with the subject of Gilad Shalit’s captivity, and also read the book “When the Shark and the Fish First Met”, which Gilad wrote as a child.  They also sent letters of support to his parents, Noam and Aviva.

Last week’s walk was part of the municipal project “Walking Together”, in which many students walk to and from school each day, thereby reducing the use of private cars and becoming involved in physical activity.

Mayor Nahum Hofree: “Raanana students have displayed their support and solidarity with this very painful public issue.  It is our responsibility to encourage our younger generation to show empathy and to become involved socially, and I am proud of our children who have joined the call for Gilad’s release.”
