Dear Residents,

Summer is here, bringing with it the mosquito season.  In addition to their annoying bites, mosquitoes transmit diseases.  The Raanana Municipality takes steps on a regular basis to prevent the incubation of mosquitoes in the city’s water reservoirs, conduits and drainage.

In recent years, there has been a prevalence of the Aedes albopictus mosquito.  It originates in the Far East and it is black with white stripes.  This mosquito stings during the daytime and dusk hours, but not at night.  Its flying span is relatively short – only hundreds of meters.  The female mosquito lays its eggs in small containers, plants, plant saucers, pools, jugs, tires, etc.

If you were stung by this mosquito, its may be assumed that the source of its incubation is close to your place of residence.

Only through preventative action, can we prevent this nuisance:

• Once a week, carefully check the area surrounding your home.
• Locate areas where there is standing water and dry them.
• Drain standing water from gutters, blockages, flooded shelters and drainage pits.
• Carefully cover and seal any standing water source that cannot be drained.
• Add fish to your ornamental ponds.  They eat the mosquito larvae.
• Drill drainage holes in pots that are likely to gather water or fill them with absorbent material.
• Avoid over-watering.
• Copper prevents mosquito larvae from developing.  Place egg traps with copper to reduce the number of mosquitoes.  Put a simple pail with 5 liters of water and 250 grams of copper in your yard – in a shady spot.
• Report sources of standing water to the Municipal Moked – 107.

Remember:  Standing water is a source of mosquito incubation.
You can prevent this hazard and peacefully survive the summer.
